During a series of experiments conducted by the Columbia Business School professors Ray Fisman and Sheena Iyengar from to , over participants were asked to have a four-minute first date with other participants of the opposite sex, rate their attractiveness, sincerity, intelligence, fun, ambition, and shared Interests, and answer the question whether they would go on another date with their partners again. The dataset was found on Kaggle and it contains questionnaire answers including demographics, dating habits, self-perception and ratings across key attributes, as well as dating decisions. Various data analyses have been performed with this dataset and insights range from gender differences in mate selection to racial preferences in dating. My goal is to perform an analysis that may have not been conducted before and I am particularly interested in how the key attributes affect dating decision as well as whether people have a clear awareness of their self value versus their perceived value or not. I first read the Speed Dating Data Key. I normalized the data that were collected through different scale methods, such as the rating method on a scale of 1—10 versus the point distribution method, ordinal scale versus interval scale e. For each entry, if the number of missing variables was significant, I chose to remove the entire entry.
We utilize an experimental Speed Dating service to examine racial preferences in mate selection. Our data allow for the direct observation of individual decisions of randomly paired individuals; we may therefore directly infer racial preferences, which was not possible in prior studies. We observe stronger same race preferences for blacks and Asians than for Hispanics and whites, with insignificant overall level of racial preferences for female Hispanics and males of all races. Females exhibit stronger racial preferences than males.
However, regardless of stated preferences, racial discrimination still occurs in online dating. Each group significantly prefers to date intra-racially. White Americans.
An Asian fetish is a strong sexual or romantic preference for persons of Asian descent, especially East or Southeast Asian descent and to some extent South Asian descent. The fetishization of East Asians by people of other ethnicities is sometimes described by the derogatory term yellow fever. Asian women are often stereotyped as being subservient, passive, and quiet. This portrayal persists today, along with the idea of Asian women—and, to a lesser extent, men—being exotic and submissive.
In the afterword to the play M. Butterfly , the writer David Henry Hwang , using the term “yellow fever”, a derogatory pun on the disease of the same name , discusses Caucasian men with a “fetish” for east Asian women. The pun refers to the color terminology for race , in which persons of East and Southeast Asian heritage are sometimes described as “Yellow people”. The term “yellow fever” describes someone who is inflicted with a disease, implying that someone with an Asian fetish has a sickness.
Hwang argues that this phenomenon is caused by stereotyping of Asians in Western society. The slang term used for a gay man, usually Caucasian, who exclusively dates men of Asian descent is ” rice queen “.
Transportation refers to the mobility of people, animals or goods from one place to another by land, water, rail, air or space. Metrics details. We find that for women, network measures of popularity and activity of the men they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors, while for men only the network measures of popularity of the women they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors. Thirdly, compared with men, women attach great importance to the socio-economic status of potential partners and their own socio-economic status will affect their enthusiasm for interaction with potential mates.
Further, we use the ensemble learning classification methods to rank the importance of factors predicting messaging behaviors, and find that the centrality indices of users are the most important factors. Finally, by correlation analysis we find that men and women show different strategic behaviors when sending messages.
Compared with men, for women sending messages, there is a stronger positive correlation between the centrality indices of women and men, and more women tend to send messages to people more popular than themselves. These results have implications for understanding gender-specific preference in online dating further and designing better recommendation engines for potential dates.
The research also suggests new avenues for data-driven research on stable matching and strategic behavior combined with game theory. Much empirical evidence shows that female and male partners look alike along a variety of attributes. It is, however, unclear how this positive sorting comes about because marriage is an equilibrium outcome arising from a process that entails searching, meeting, and choosing one another. This study takes advantage of unique data to shed light on the forces driving choices at the earliest stage of a relationship. Both women and men value physical attributes, such as age and weight, and reveal that their dating choices are assortative along several traits.

What influences love at first sight? Or, at least, love in the first four minutes? Data was gathered from participants in experimental speed dating events from During the events, the attendees would have a four minute “first date” with every other participant of the opposite sex. At the end of their four minutes, participants were asked if they would like to see their date again. They were also asked to rate their date on six attributes: Attractiveness, Sincerity, Intelligence, Fun, Ambition, and Shared Interests.
The dataset also includes questionnaire data gathered from participants at different points in the process.

There is a large amount of literature on whether interracial relationships are more unstable than same-race relationships. Contrary to several previous studies, this study finds that some interracial couples are more likely to proceed to marriage and have more stable marriage than same-race couples. White men with Asian biracial children are more likely to be married than other white male parents, black women with white biracial children are more likely to be married than other black female parents, and Asian women with white biracial children are more likely to get married but more likely to get divorced or separated once married than other Asian female parents.

When economists began broadly applying their theories of rational choicemaking, love and marriage were among the first areas they colonized. His analysis predicted a pattern of “positive assortative matching,” where men and women of similar desirability would partner with one another.
We have not progressed very much in testing his theories, or even answering the most basic dating question, for Becker or anyone else: What, exactly, makes someone desirable?

Economist d7de. In , economist Ray Fisman, in a two-year study he co-authored on dating preferences among Columbia University students, did not find evidence of a general preference among white men for Asian women. As quoted on Slate. However, we also found that East Asian women did not discriminate against white men only against black and Hispanic men.
As a result, the white man-Asian woman pairing was the most common form of interracial dating—but because of the women’s neutrality, not the men’s pronounced preference. Men don’t seem to discriminate based on race when it comes to dating.

Leveraging a massive dataset of over million potential matches between single users on a leading mobile dating application, we were able to identify numerous characteristics of effective matching. Effective matching is defined as the exchange of contact information with the likely intent to meet in person. The characteristics of effective match include alignment of psychological traits i. For nearly all characteristics, the more similar the individuals were, the higher the likelihood was of them finding each other desirable and opting to meet in person.
The only exception was introversion, where introverts rarely had an effective match with other introverts. Given that people make their initial selection in no more than 11 s, and ultimately prefer a partner who shares numerous attributes with them, we suggest that users are less selective in their early preferences and gradually, during their conversation, converge onto clusters that share a high degree of similarity in characteristics.
